Pop open a bag of Not Ordinary Chips and the first thing you’ll notice is what’s not there: no deep-fryer grease, no mystery ingredients, no ordinary potato-only lineup. What you’ll find instead is millet — an ancient grain that has been feeding people for thousands of years, and the reason our chips snack a little differently.
So why build a chip around millet? Here’s the story.
What is millet, anyway?
Millet isn’t new — it’s one of the oldest cultivated grains on the planet, grown across Africa and Asia for thousands of years and referenced in texts as far back as the ancient Greco-Roman world. Today it’s one of the most important cereal grains grown worldwide. It’s a naturally gluten-free whole grain with a mild, slightly nutty flavour and a light, satisfying crunch when it’s popped — which makes it a natural fit for a chip.
Why we chose millet for our chips
Most chips start with a potato and end in a fryer. We wanted to start somewhere more interesting. Millet gave us a base that’s:
- A whole ancient grain — not a refined, stripped-down starch.
- Naturally gluten-free — so more people can enjoy them.
- A source of fibre and plant protein — the kind of thing you actually want in a snack.
- Rich in minerals like magnesium, phosphorus and manganese, plus naturally occurring antioxidants.
Then we air-pop them instead of frying them — so you get the crunch without the grease of a traditional fried chip. No artificial colours. No preservatives. Just millet, real seasoning, and a whole lot of crunch. (We do the same with our potato chips, too — popped, never fried.)
What makes millet a smarter snack base
Snacking has changed. More of us are reading the back of the bag — looking for whole grains, fibre and simpler ingredient lists instead of the usual fried-and-forgotten options. Millet checks those boxes naturally:
- Whole-grain goodness — you’re getting the whole kernel, not just refined starch.
- Fibre — something many everyday snacks are missing.
- Gluten-free by nature — no substitutions or workarounds needed.
- Feel-good crunch — light and crispy, thanks to popping instead of frying.
(An honest note: millet is a wholesome grain, but chips are still a treat — enjoy them as part of a balanced, varied diet.)
Millet chips vs. your usual bag
Set a Not Ordinary millet chip next to a standard fried potato chip and the differences add up fast: an ancient whole grain instead of a refined base, air-popped instead of deep-fried, and a short, real ingredient list instead of a long one. Same crave-worthy crunch — a smarter starting point.
How to snack on them
Our millet chips come in Ketchup, BBQ, Smokey Chipotle and Sea Salt & Vinegar — bold Canadian flavours built for lunch boxes, road trips, hockey nights, and that 3 p.m. desk-drawer moment. Straight from the bag, alongside a dip, or crumbled over a salad or grain bowl for extra crunch.
Give the ancient grain a try
